Businesses with real coverage needs
- Serve alcohol: bars and restaurants need liquor liability.
- Drive for work: contractors, delivery and service businesses need commercial auto.
- Work on customers’ property or vehicles: auto shops, contractors and cleaners.
- Have employees: workers’ comp, and more exposure the bigger the team.
- Long hours, events or crowds: venues, gyms and day cares.
These owners think about insurance because they have to. A one-person consultant working from home rarely needs much.
Get the X-date
The single most useful thing you can learn on a first visit is the X-date: when their current policy expires. Most owners won’t switch mid-term, but nearly all of them will take a second quote a few weeks before renewal.
“I’m not asking you to change anything today. When does your business policy renew? I’d like to get you a second quote about a month before, so you have something to compare.”
Write the date down with their name and what they carry. That list of X-dates is your pipeline.
Where the leads come from
- Walking your territory. Owners trust the agent who came in person.
- New businesses. Grand openings and new filings need coverage before they open.
- Referrals from accountants, bankers, contractors and current clients.
- Your chamber of commerce and local trade associations.
- A prospecting map like Canvas Scout, which puts every business in your territory on one map with the ones that serve alcohol, drive to jobs or work on customers’ vehicles at the top.
What to bring
Lead with their exposures, not your carrier list: “Your techs drive to jobs every day. Is every vehicle on a commercial policy?” Bring a short checklist of what a business like theirs usually carries and offer a free coverage review. Make sure you are licensed for the lines you quote in that state.
Follow up to the renewal
Check in a couple of times a year, then start the quote about 45 to 60 days before the X-date so there’s time to underwrite. Note every visit, who you spoke to and what they carry, so you’re never asking the same question twice.
Where Canvas Scout fits
Canvas Scout maps every local business in your territory and points out the risks worth a conversation: liquor liability, commercial auto, workers’ comp, garage liability and professional liability.
